  • Rob Woodman, Engineer-Intern

    Project Description
The new school is designed for 375 students and a staff of 50.

The project is under construction following an arduous permitting challenge of “vernal pools” and attendant habitat.  The project includes:

    • Wastewater pretreatment to extend the life of the on-site wastewater disposal field.
    • Water quality measures to comply with the November 2005 Maine Department of Environmental Protection rules.
    • Two oversized athletic fields.
    • Site design elements that incorporate LEEDS principles.

    project overview

DeLuca-Hoffman Associates, Inc. was engaged by PDT Architects to assist in site selection, permitting, and site design for a new elementary school in MSAD #21. Opportunities for siting the school were limited by the area topography that is principally river valley floodplains, a small upland terrace, and near mountain terrain. A forested site and former borrow pit requiring acquisition from three property owners was selected to site the school.

The site has a historic past with Indian trails, a mica mine, and a rake factory, all of interest to the Maine Historical Preservation Commission.
